Excellent grinder sandwiches! Friendly service, even the cooks in the back work to meet your specific order. We will be back again!
We had an hour and a half for lunch and started scouting Yelp for nearby places. This place was the first to pop up for lunch, and the reviews look decent and seems like a great place for a quick bite, so we wanted to try it out. It's located on Myrtle ave, with a parking lot around and plenty of street parking. We parked and you can either enter the place indoor or outdoor setting, we chose indoor. Looking at the menu, there's a lot that we wanted to try. However, we ended up ordering the large pastrami grinder, large genes special, side of fries, and Diet Coke drink. The staff are very friendly and welcoming! As we waited for our order we can hear them shouting out orders and many times they were customized grinders such as extra meat, add mayo, no cheese, etc. I wanted to try their grinders as is and then perhaps I'd customize it as well. I started reading the menu more and noticed that for the grinders, you can ask for more condiments such as mustard, mayo, vinegar, pickles, onions, chili flakes). When our order was ready, the staff was very nice and also offered pepperoncinis and you can have more if you need more. We also got free refills on our drinks. The sandwiches were packed with meat. Pastrami was definitely delicious, it was juicy and well seasoned. The genes special had so many layers of meat, one of the meat was a little spicy, I'm not good with spicy food usually, but it was just a hint of spicy. Still very delicious and I ate the whole half. The bread was chewy and soft, delicious on its own. Fries were crispy and definitely great with the grinders. Overall, very delicious and satisfied! We got a stamp card as well so once we order ten we'll get a free small grinder! Unfortunately, they no longer have a public restroom. Which is fine since we only needed to eat lunch and go back to where we had plans!
They make the best pastrami sandwich I have ever had. The person at the counter was very polite and friendly when we picked up our order. Will be back.
I need to be upfront: Gene's Grinders has seriously threatened my relationship with my fiancée. Despite a nine year amazing relationship, my lovely woman does not like sandwiches. Or meat. I don't know how to deal with that, but I do. Like any other relationship, we just focus on other things, we move forward. And I decided to move forward on this one as well. And yet... Gene's pastrami sandwiches continue to call out, like a Siren singing a song that urges me to flounder upon the rocks. I have to respond. It is too ridiculously good. It has caused me to make up excuses for driving 50 minutes round-trip from Pasadena, like "hey honey, I'm gonna swing by the Costco in Irwindale", any excuse to get out to Monrovia to pick up one of those damn sandwiches. To be sure, my subterfuge has worked... Occasionally. It's hard to cover up the pastrami breath, and the almost narcotic-like glaze in my eyes when I eat those sandwiches and I confront my woman back home. But it's worked until now. The issue? They started their damn holiday two for one special, which is ridiculous, because there's no need to discount these damn things. But I jumped on board. And I told my girl today "hey honey, I'm gonna take a quick trip to the gas station" but she caught me. I went out and got the two for one. Of course the pastrami, of course... What am I, a communist? The goddamn thing is made by Angels. And for the second sandwich I had the Gene's Special. So far I've only eaten half of the pastrami. You can't eat the whole damn thing. You can't. I'm big, fat, and a pig... But even I can only eat half of the thing. It is so damn good. I wrapped the rest of them up, and I plan to consume them over the next few days. But based on what I ate today, it is as amazing as always. Incredibly fresh bread, ingredients, warm pastrami, over stuffed. The goddamn thing weighs as much as a Buick. And that's because of the meat and things inside it. It is that good. If you order this, and eat it, and don't like it? You need to visit a Buddhist temple in Tibet, and contemplate what you are doing on this planet. Anyway, thank you Andy, thank you team, thank you for what you guys do. I hope you are all living the American dream, because you put out a product which is really fantastic and we appreciate you. I checked online and I probably drove by approximately 1.3 gazillion other sandwich shops on the way from my house in Pasadena to Monrovia, but I do so because you guys really deliver for the client. Hats off, Gene's Grinders. Even though I now have to spend a couple of months groveling to my fiancée because she won't eat sandwiches and I am afraid of her.
Bit of a glitch in the Bogo But still best damn Pastramis n cold cuts Congrats Andy!
Love the vibe of this spot. Seems like a local favorite. Seen trash men, cops, road workers, nurses, and in general the whole community stop in. I went with a small salami with mayo and it was choice. Plenty of meat and the bread was great. I heard a lot of people ordering well done fries so I feel like I gotta try them next time. Plenty of parking and street parking. There's a nice little patio with a service window if you don't feel like going inside. Definitely give this spot a try if you're looking for a good sandwich.
Gene's Grinders has been in business for many years and I can see why. Their sandwiches, cold and hot, are delicious. They offer two sizes for their sandwiches, but the difference is like night and day. Just go with the large; you can thank me later. This establishment is tucked just off Old Town Monrovia on Myrtle Ave. You are able to go inside, order and dine, or order from the outside. I only interacted with one staff member and she was pleasant. Inside was clean, with some tables, chairs, and memorabilia. I ordered their large meatball sandwich and it did not disappoint. The sauce and meatballs were savory and bread was soft and chewy. Overall, a positive experience and will continue eat here.
Great sandwiches made with quality ingredients! So far my husband and I have tried the pastrami, roast beef and turkey, Gene's special, and roast beef dip--everything was delicious and solid! We enjoyed the pastrami sandwich the most, the pastrami was sliced very thin and had good flavor. Apparently their chicken sandwich is also very popular, but it's only available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays according to their menu. We'll have to come back and try that someday. Service is always friendly and quick! They also provide free peperoncini and banana peppers to go with your sandwiches. The restaurant itself isn't big, but they do have a few tables in the outdoor patio.
I came here on a Saturday around 3pm. I didn't know what to expect as it was my first time here. I ordered 2 large sandwiches (1 meatball and 1 Gene's Cold Sandwich Special). Both sandwiches came inside a bag that seemed to weigh 10 lbs. I was impressed by the portions and the quality after starting my first bites of the meatball sandwich. After eating just one half, i was already full. I realized i had enough for days to come. The cold sandwich was amazing as well. The customer service was top notch. The employees were really nice and friendly. This has now become my favorite sandwhich/grinder place. My only gripe would be that they close at 4pm. This means i could only come here in weekends due to working in Anaheim. This place would make so much more if it were open until 8pm or so. I suppose they have their reasons for not staying open until that time. I will definitely be returning and cannot wait to try the other grinders.
